Doctors should have the freedom to recommend the treatment they deem appropriate for their patients - including medical marijuana. Marijuana - legal as medicine under state law in 22 states and the District of Columbia - has been shown to be an effective treatment for the symptoms and side effects associated with HIV/AIDS, Cancer, Hepatitis C, PTSD, MS and other neuromuscular disorders, Glaucoma, dystonia, and chronic pain. The American College of Physicians, American Public Health Association, American Nurses Association, and many other associations and organizations support the availability of medicinal marijuana.

The Pot Predicament: Is Marijuana Good Medicine? will be held Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Pugh Hall. (CAMPUS MAP: http://campusmap.ufl.edu/. We recommend parking at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.) It will feature a panel discussion on Amendment 2, the proposed Florida constitutional amendment that would legalize medical marijuana.
The panel includes a UF law professor who helped write the amendment; the Alachua County sheriff, who is critical of the amendment; a UF pharmacy professor, who also has concerns about medical marijuana; and a retired Air Force captain who has used medical marijuana for chronic pain. Gainesville Sun editorial page editor Nathan Crabbe will moderate.
The event is brought to you by The Sun and UF’s Bob Graham Center for Public Service, with additional sponsorship from the League of Women Voters of Alachua County and Florida Blue Key. The program is also being supported by a grant from the Florida Campus Compact.
The event will be streamed live on the Graham Center’s website, www.bobgrahamcenter.ufl.edu. It will also be live tweeted on Twitter using the hashtag #FLMedPot. Members of the public can also use the hashtag to submit questions, and there will be a question-and-answer session at the event.
