Dear Friend, If we don't pass Amendment 2, patients will continue be forced into a choice between deadly, addictive and caustic prescriptions or the threat of arrest and court. No one with a debilitating condition should have to make that choice when something as benign as medical marijuana can be made... read more

Forum: "The Pot Predicament: Is Marijuana Good Medicine?"

Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at 06:00 PM · 3 rsvps

The Pot Predicament: Is Marijuana Good Medicine? will be held Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Pugh Hall. (CAMPUS MAP: http://campusmap.ufl.edu/. We recommend parking at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.)  It will feature a panel discussion on Amendment 2, the proposed Florida constitutional amendment that would legalize medical marijuana.

The panel includes a UF law professor who helped write the amendment; the Alachua County sheriff, who is critical of the amendment; a UF pharmacy professor, who also has concerns about medical marijuana; and a retired Air Force captain who has used medical marijuana for chronic pain. Gainesville Sun editorial page editor Nathan Crabbe will moderate.

The event is brought to you by The Sun and UF’s Bob Graham Center for Public Service, with additional sponsorship from the League of Women Voters of Alachua County and Florida Blue Key. The program is also being supported by a grant from the Florida Campus Compact.

The event will be streamed live on the Graham Center’s website, www.bobgrahamcenter.ufl.edu. It will also be live tweeted on Twitter using the hashtag #FLMedPot. Members of the public can also use the hashtag to submit questions, and there will be a question-and-answer session at the event.

The panelists for the event are:

  • Jon Mills is dean emeritus, professor of law and director of the Center for Governmental Responsibility at the University of Florida Levin College of Law. He was dean of the college from 1999 to 2003. He served in the Florida Legislature for 10 years and was Speaker of the House in 1987-1988. He drafted the ballot language of Amendment 2 and is chairman of Florida for Care, a group created to help shape medical marijuana regulations in Florida if the amendment is approved.

  • Sadie Darnell was sworn in as the first female sheriff of Alachua County in 2006 and is now serving her third term. She was a 30-veteran of the Gainesville Police Department, where her work included serving as public information officer during the 1990 student murders. She opposes Amendment 2 because she believes the wording has numerous loopholes, the measure lacks accountability and that the use of a drug for a purported medical purpose should not be put to a popular vote.

  • Paul Doering is a emeritus distinguished service professor in pharmacotherapy and translational research at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. He is also co-director of the statewide Drug Information and Pharmacy Resource Center. He has been recognized four times as Teacher of the Year. He is concerned with the vague language regarding who would qualify for medical marijuana under Amendment 2 and that it might be part of an effort to legalize recreational marijuana use.

  • Jeffrey Lahman retired after 21 years of service as an Air Force captain and now lives in Lake Butler. He earned a bachelor’s degree in workforce education from Southern Illinois University and a master’s degree in human resource management from Troy State University. He used marijuana for a medical condition while living in Arizona, where voters legalized medical marijuana in 2010. He supports the passage Amendment 2 due to compassion for himself, his family, his friends and his fellow Floridians.
